Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space

Bristol-based imprint Tectonic Recordings has unveiled details for a new collection of remixes by dub producer Hopeton Brown, AKA Scientist.

Born in Kingston Town in 1960, Brown is one of dub music's most important innovators. He spent his teenage years as an assistant at King Tubby's Dromilly Road studio, where he eventually developed his mixing skills. His nickname was born when Prince Jammy and Bunny Lee were having a conversation about Brown's forward-thinking ideas in the studio, allegedly leading the former artist to say "Damn, this little boy must be a scientist." He's released more than 20 albums over the course of his career, including titles like The Best Dub Album in the World, High Priest of Dub and Scientist Wins the World Cup.

The new collection, Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space, bridges the gap between original dub and contemporary dubstep. The first disc shows Brown reworking the likes of Shackleton, Guido, Mala and Kode9, while the second provides all of the tracks' original versions. Label boss Pinch says the compilation is "definitely my proudest moment for Tectonic to date. The influence of dub swings round full circle!"
